Tech onboarding plan
A 30-day plan for bringing a new field tech up to solo routes. The gates matter more than the dates: move on when each gate is met, not when the calendar says so.
Before day one
- Accounts created: email, field app, time tracking, parts ordering
- Uniform, PPE, and tools ordered
- Truck or stock bin assigned and inventoried
- Ride-along lead assigned for weeks 1-2
- Licensing and certifications verified and copies on file
Week 1: Shadow
- Ride along on every job; observe, then assist
- Learn the job flow in the field app: open the job, record notes and photos, complete checklists, collect signatures
- Walk through truck stock and the parts reorder process
- Review safety procedures and site etiquette (shoe covers, parking, how we talk to customers)
- Gate: completes a job record end to end with lead watching
Week 2: Lead with backup
- New tech runs the job; lead observes and steps in only when needed
- Daily 10-minute debrief: what went well, what to fix tomorrow
- Practice explaining findings and options to the customer
- Gate: three jobs in a row with complete records and no lead intervention
Weeks 3-4: Supervised solo
- Solo on simpler job types; lead reachable by phone
- Manager reviews every job record (photos, readings, notes) the same day
- One scheduled ride-along to check habits
- Gate: callback rate and record quality at team standard for the period
- Gate: customer feedback reviewed with the tech
Day 30 review
- Strengths
- Areas to improve
- Job types cleared for solo
- Job types still requiring a lead
- Next review date
- Manager signature
