HVAC commissioning checklist

A one-visit checklist for commissioning a new split system, heat pump, or gas furnace. It does not replace the manufacturer's installation instructions; where a target value is needed, record the manufacturer's spec next to your reading.

Before power-up

  • Equipment matches the approved quote and AHRI-matched combination
  • Outdoor unit level, on pad or brackets, required clearances met
  • Line set sized per manufacturer, insulated, supported, and sealed at wall penetration
  • Brazed joints purged with nitrogen; pressure test held with no decay
  • Evacuated to the manufacturer's micron target; decay test passed
  • Disconnect, breaker size, and wire gauge match nameplate MCA / MOCP
  • Condensate drain trapped, pitched, and tested with water; float switch installed if required
  • Filter installed, correct size, airflow arrow in the right direction
  • Ductwork connected and sealed at the equipment

Startup readings

Run the system at least 15 minutes in each mode before recording final readings.

Supply voltage (L1-L2)
Compressor amps (vs RLA)
Condenser fan amps (vs FLA)
Indoor blower amps (vs FLA)
Suction pressure / saturation temp
Liquid pressure / saturation temp
Superheat (target)
Subcooling (target)
Return air temp
Supply air temp
Total external static pressure (vs rated)
Outdoor ambient temp

Gas heat (if applicable)

  • Gas line leak-checked
  • Inlet and manifold gas pressure set to spec
  • Combustion analysis recorded (O₂, CO air-free)
  • Flue / venting pitch, clearances, and termination verified
  • Temperature rise within the nameplate range
  • CO checked at the supply register and ambient

Controls and safeties

  • Thermostat configured for equipment type (stages, heat pump, aux heat)
  • Heating, cooling, fan, and emergency heat each cycle correctly
  • Defrost board / settings verified on heat pumps
  • High / low pressure switches and float switch tested

Leave-behind and closeout

  • Photos taken: nameplates, line set, disconnect, drain, filter, gauges at final readings
  • Customer shown thermostat operation and filter location / size
  • Manuals and warranty registration info left with the customer
  • Work area cleaned; old equipment removed per agreement
  • Readings and photos attached to the job record
